Onam: Ten Joyous Days
Onam, Kerala’s national festival, arrives during the Malayalam month of Chingam and is celebrated with great enthusiasm for ten days. The festival begins with Atham, marking the first day, and continues until Thiruvonam, the grand finale on the tenth day.
Legend says that Onam commemorates the return of King Maveli, a beloved and wise ruler, who comes back to visit his people during this time. In his honour, people celebrate with joy, decorating their homes with beautiful flower carpets called Pookkalam and preparing a grand feast known as Onasadya.
Each day of Onam brings new excitement, with different flowers being added to the Pookkalam. People enjoy swinging and playing traditional games like Kaikottikali and Pulikkali. Families gather to enjoy the festivities together. In some regions, the famous Vallamkali, or boat race, is held.
Onam is a festival of togetherness, fun, and celebration. It is a time when friends and family come together, dressed in new clothes, to enjoy the colours, flavours, and traditions.
