Online Safety for Kids – Never Click on Tempting Links
The internet has become as essential to our lives as food or clothing. It’s a part of our daily routine, and we often treat it as a necessity. In this situation, can we completely keep kids away from it? Is that the right way to make them future-ready? We don’t think so.
The internet offers many opportunities for learning and fun, but it also comes with risks. Can we surf in the sea before learning how to balance in heavy waves? Similarly, we need to teach our kids to be internet-ready, at an age-appropriate level.
One of the biggest dangers, especially for kids aged 4 to 6 (and even for older kids and adults), is clicking on tempting links that offer big rewards or gifts. As parents, it’s crucial to understand first and then help our children understand why they should avoid clicking on such links
The Risks Behind the Click
How to Teach Your Child About Safe Clicking
- Pause Before Clicking: Teach your child to always pause and ask an adult before clicking any link.
- Hover to Check: For parents, hover over a link to see where it leads. Show this technique to your kids, but make them aware that they are not old enough to fully understand whether the site is safe. Warn them not to attempt it on their own.
- Use Parental Controls: Set up parental controls and filters to block risky websites and ensure safer browsing.
Online safety begins with awareness. By guiding our children to make smart choices, we can ensure their online experiences are both fun and safe.
